Hushed by Kelley York
A new adult novel from Entangled's Embrace imprint...
He's loved her. Killed for her. Yet he may not be able to save her.
Eighteen-year-old Archer couldn't protect his best friend, Vivian, from what happened when they were kids. Since then, he's never stopped trying to shelter her from everything else. It doesn't matter that Vivian only uses him when skipping from one toxic relationship to another. Archer is always there, reeled in and tossed out, waiting to be noticed.
Then Evan Bishop breezes into town with a warm smile and calming touch, and Archer can't deny his attraction to him. Evan is the only person who keeps him around without a single string attached. And the harder Archer falls for Evan, the more he sees Vivian for the manipulative hot-mess she really is.
But Viv has her hooks in deep, and once she finds out Archer's dark secret, she threatens to expose the truth if she doesn't get what she wants. And what she wants is for him to end his relationship with Evan...permanently.

3.5 stars.I liked the unique story-line and how the author gave us a likable character who I felt sympathy for despite the fact he is a murderer - go figure! (Dexter fans will enjoy this) But I just couldn't quite get into it as much as I'd wanted to and would have liked a darker, deeper journey into these characters and the subject matter. Instead I found it a little vague and light, and perhaps a little to 'easy' i.e.the police not putting things together when they should be a lot smarter than that & Evan just 'accepting things' so easily... But it was still an enjoyable read and I think the main character and the satisfying ending was the saving grace for me. It was a nice balance to a awful situation that I wasn't sure how it was going to end!

Hushed Entangled Embrace edition by Kelley York Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Grade B
Archer has two issues. #1 his best friend Vivian, who he couldn't protect as a child. #2 he's overcompensating for #1 is a big way, killing the boys, now men, from whom he couldn't save her. When Evan enters his life, Archer begins to pull away from Vivian as he recognizes just what a train wreck she is. Too bad Vivian doesn't like the word NO.
While HUSHED required me to suspend my disbelief that a teenage serial killer could also be a a decent guy, I rooted for Archer to set some boundaries and make better decisions. I genuinely empathized Archer's history and at times I liked him. I couldn't find anything redeeming in the narcissistic, manipulative Vivian. And Evan, well I just couldn't understand what he saw in and why he stayed with Archer, who brought nothing to the relationship. I wish Kelley York had delved into Evan's psyche or provided some reasoning.
THEMES murder, rape, friendship, LGBT, family
HUSHED, although unrealistic, tells the dark story of a misguided, would-be hero who becomes a serial killer in order to avenge a friend's rape.
Woah, that was intense.
So I bought this book ages ago, tried to read it, couldn't get into it, and put it down. Now, after finally reading, all I can think is what the hell was wrong with me that I couldn't get into this book the first time? It is a roller coaster ride of emotion, amazing and terrifying characters, and things that just make you cuss out loud (which is real fun when you are reading in public and people start giving you the funky eyeball while slowly distancing themselves).
---- MINOR SPOILERS to follow but nothing that the book blurb itself doesn't reveal ----
Archer. I haven't met a character so messed up and twisted since Jazz in Barry Lyga's I Hunt Serial Killers. But unlike Jazz who creeped me out so much that I couldn't muster any sympathy for him, I did feel bad for Archer, and then felt bad for feeling bad for him. I mean, the guy is a straight up killer, but thanks to York's amazing ability to craft characters, he isn't a flat character or a stereotypical killer by any means. As the story progresses and Evan slowly starts to bring the real Archer to the surface, my sympathy grew as did my anxiety for Archer and Evan. As things progressed, I lost all hope that there could any chance at a happy ending, any silver lining at all. York just keeps twisting and plotting and sinking the hook deeper and deeper. But if you want to know how it all ends, you'll just have to read it yourself.
This book is simply captivating in a toxic, twisted and creepy way. This book drew me in right from the beginning, and by the half way point my mind was simply saying "no no no" I did not want to happen what I thought would. I had great difficulty in putting this book down and not thinking about it. It was was a very dark and disturbing book involving serious issues like murder, death, rape and very unhealthy relationships. The emotions in this book felt very real and raw which makes you feel connected to the characters. I don't know if I have ever disliked a character as much as I disliked Vivian, she is simply .... poison, sucking people into her desperate world. But thats exactly what she is to Archer, poison, who is a killer but you just want to hug (or is that just me and I need help?). Archer is desperate to try and save Vivian, after years of friendship, he feels like he owes her protection and will do anything to get her back to the sweet girl he loves. He is confused, torn, and emotionally vunerable. But if Vivian is the poison, then Evan is the antidote, or light at the end of the tunnel. Evan is everything that Archer needs. It was impossible for me not to want Acher to find that light at the end of his dark tunnel, even if he is a killer, and I never knew if he would find the light. All I can say is read this book, you will not be disapointed. It is simply captivating.
Will I read it again? Yes
Would I recommend it? YES YES
